Superior RoughRiders @ Tulsa Jr. Oilers

The Superior RoughRiders took two of three games from the Jr. Oilers in Tulsa.

The visiting ‘Riders took the lead two times in the first period of Friday’s game, but Tulsa scored twice in the second period – with the go-ahead goal coming in the final minute of play – to take a 3-2 lead.

That momentum carried over into the third period for the Jr. Oilers as they scored three more times in a 6-3 win.

Sam Mancini and Maxim Chegrintsev each scored their second goal of the game in the final period.  Mancini also collected a pair of assists for Tulsa and Richard Albrecht made 38 saves to earn the “W”.

Mancini and Chegrintsev were kept in check Saturday and the Jr. Oilers were held to 13 shots on goal.  Marc Demers (2-2-4) and Cody Oakes (1-3-4) figured in four of Superior’s six goals and Hampus Akesson made 12 saves in a 6-1 win. 

The Jr. Oilers held a 2-1 lead early in the second period of the rubber game on Sunday only to see the RoughRiders come charging back.  Superior scored the next four goals – three of them by Oakes – to take the game 5-2.  Akesson made 23 saves for his second win in as many days while Albrecht made 42 saves in a losing effort.

Springfield Express vs. Oklahoma City Jr. Blazers

The Springfield Express were swept by the Jr. Blazers in Oklahoma City but picked up a couple of points from overtime losses and maintain their spot atop the Mid-West Division standings.

The Jr. Blazers, meanwhile, made a statement by taking all three games from the Express, shutting out the division’s top-scoring team in the first game, then showing they could come up with clutch goals and beat them in a pair of close games.

Ole Nilsen stopped all 21 shots he faced – seven in each period – and six different Jr. Blazers scored in a 6-0 OKC win to kick off the series Friday night.

Saturday was a back-and-forth affair with Springfield watching a 3-1 lead turn into a 5-3 deficit, then tying the game in the final minute of regulation to force overtime.

Adam Skutchan’s second goal of the game won it in overtime for the Jr. Blazers, who also got a pair of goals from Kirill Romanov.

Both teams held leads in Sunday’s series finale.  The Express came from behind again to force OT only to see Oklahoma City win in dramatic fashion in front of their home crowd.

Linus Dahlberg’s second goal of the game tied thing up in the third period but it was OKC’s Tomas Nemeth – with his second goal of the game – who sent the Jr. Blazers’ fans home happy for the third night in a row.  Nemeth, who hit the 100-point plateau with the Long Beach Bombers in each of the last two seasons, also added an assist for a three-point night.

Nick Bretzger made 36 saves for Springfield but was the tough luck loser for the second night in a row.  Filip Kostka made 15 of his 27 saves in the first period for Oklahoma City.

Wichita Jr. Thunder @ Dallas Snipers

10.16.15 – Wichita 7, Dallas 1

10.17.15 – Dallas 6, Wichita 3

10.18.15 – Wichita 4, Dallas 1

The Dallas Snipers only managed one win out of three home games with the Wichita Jr. Thunder but those two points were enough to move them into second place in the Mid-West Division.

Peter Cicmanec (3 goals), Tom Lindstrom (3 assists) and David Good (1-3-4) led the way in a 7-1 win for Wichita in the series opener.  Erik Spath continued his hot goaltending for the Jr. Thunder, stopping 32 of 33 shots.

Dallas broke open a 2-2 game with three goals in a span of 6:27 late in the second period of a 6-3 win on Saturday.  Dusan Olsa scored twice for the Snipers and Alexander Moustakis made 32 saves.

Spath was again a difference-maker for Wichita in Sunday’s game – a 4-1 win for the Jr. Thunder that drew them to within a point of Dallas in the division standings.

The Swedish netminder faced 39 shots and stopped 38 of them – including all 16 he faced in the first period.  Four different Wichita players scored in the game.

The Rhinos were off this past weekend.
