Weekend Recap: Oklahoma City Blazers

A pair of goals from Brigham Neuhold in the third frame put Oklahoma City ahead and Joel Svensson registered his seventh win, and second shutout making 29 saves against Dallas.

Since playing at the Allen Event Center, home of the ECHL’s Allen Americans, the Blazers have wanted another attempt at the Snipers. They were capable of mustering up a strong win at the Arctic Edge Ice Arena on Friday.

Lukas Narovec ignited the goal scoring for the Blazers at 7:35 of the first but then were scoreless for the entire second period.

The Blazer's Neuhold-Hajek-St. Onge line made all the difference for Oklahoma in the latter stages of the game. The even shot-count made for a good set-up in a tighter Game 2 the following night.

It took six rounds of shootout but Gasper Konc and the Dallas Snipers hustled for the two points over Oklahoma City, who was stopped by Alexander Aleshkin.

Aleshkin made 14 of 17 saves in the regulation time before stopping all six Blazers in the shootout. The Snipers outshot Oklahoma with 36 total shots.

Konc may have had the game-winner but Arvidas Domeika (1G-2A) scored three points to force overtime. Domeika had the primary assist on Bradley Richardson’s goal at 2:44 of the third to tie the game.

Dallas scored first but quickly let the Blazers tie one minute after. Into the second period, the game was 1-1 before Egor Taran took the lead back for the Blazers. Dallas showed a brilliant response with two great looks that ended up in goals and they were on their way to overtime.

After Dallas battled to take control of the score, they kept the pressure as firm as a vice grip to render the final two minutes of regulation and the overtime, scoreless.

Dallas is 11 points behind third place, Oklahoma City, and will have a decent opportunity to close that gap as they face six games against a lower half team. The Blazers will have a more difficult six games taking on the well rested Pueblo Bulls and the Northern Colorado Eagles.

After scoring the night before to send the Snipers and Blazers to overtime, Bradley Richardson upped his performance with a hat-trick to give Dallas its first weekend-series win since the start of the season.

The two straight wins are the first back-to-back wins—in the same weekend—for Dallas since beating the Pueblo Bulls in late September.

Coincidentally, the Snipers achieved those opening wins in overtime and shootout as well.

The Blazers got on the board with Brigham Neuhold (1G-1A), Dylan Koch and Benjamin St. Onge. Prior to their goal, Richardson had scored twice already at 17:33 of the first and 16:22 of the second.

Alexsey Syrotenko has been a consistent player for the Snipers but went silent for a few games prior to this weekend. Well, Syrotenko reappeared with a goal and four points to lead all skaters.

The Snipers forced Danick Francoeur to make 43 saves as they outshot the Blazers by 19 shots.
